Learn more about our Red, Yellow, Green System for Weight Control.

Since 1983, The Children's Institute has embraced the Red, Yellow, Green System for Weight Control. Initially developed to treat obesity in pre-teens and adapted for Prader-Willi syndrome by dietitians at The Children's Institute, it's based on a familiar color system: the traffic light.

The Red, Yellow, Green (RYG) diet is successful because it eliminates calorie counting and food anxiety. The system is not only easy for individuals to adopt, but easy to follow at home, school, and in life.

A System That Works

Our trademarked weight control system is one that aims to make the difficult task of losing weight and eating healthier easier for individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome and their families. The red, yellow, green color codes based on the traffic light make the guide easy to follow and easy to use.

Using an individualized daily meal plan and the Red, Yellow, Green System for Weight Control, calories are controlled by dividing food into low, moderate, and high-calorie food groups. Individuals using the system learn to "go" with some foods, "be cautious" with some foods, and "stop" eating other foods.

Red foods are "Stop" foods.
  • High in calories
  • Limited nutrient content
  • Very limited in the daily meal plan
Yellow foods are "Caution" foods.
  • High in calories, rich in nutrients
  • Basic foods for a well-balanced diet
  • Eaten in specified amounts
Green foods are "Go" foods.
  • Low in calories
  • Not considered "free" foods
