Lauren SeamanToday, to celebrate National Nutrition Month, we present a question-and-answer session with Clinical Dietitian Lauren Seaman.

When did you start working in your field?
I started working in the nutrition field in 2010 through a dietetic internship at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

When did you start working at The Children’s Institute?
September of 2011.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Huntingdon, a small town in central PA.

As a child, what did you want to be?
I wanted to be a lot of things, actually: a vet, a zoologist, an optometrist, to name a few.

What did your high-school guidance counselor say you should do for a living?
I actually became interested in nutrition while I was in high school and they were supportive of that.

Where did you go to college? Did you do any post-grad work and, if so, where did you attend and what did you study?
University of Pittsburgh, Hail to Pitt!

What inspired you to go into your field?
I knew I wanted to do something in the medical field. Nutrition combined my love of food with science and math so it was a good fit for me.

What do you like most about your job?
I really enjoy seeing my patients achieve their goals and move towards a healthier lifestyle.

What do you like about Pittsburgh?
I love how much there is to do from sporting events, to concerts, to festivals.

Do you have any pets?
I have yellow lab mix named Gibson.

Do you have any hobbies?
I enjoy reading, music, and movies. I also enjoy swimming and running. I’m currently training for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon in May.

Do you want to give shout-outs to any family – nuclear or otherwise – in the area?
My husband Ryan and Gibson, of course!

What is your favorite sports team?
The Pittsburgh Steelers

Who is your favorite musician?
That’s a tough one. I have recently been very into Lake Street Dive and Father John Misty.

If you could have any superpower, what would you choose?
Definitely teleportation, it would be amazing to instantly get from one place to another.

If you were given a $1 million check to give to one group or charity – other than The Children’s Institute – who would get it? Why?
Humane Animal Rescue, we adopted our dog from there and I love all they do for animals.

If you could meet any historical figure, living or dead, who would you choose to meet?
Maya Angelou, I’m so impressed by her life’s work and it would be an honor to meet her.
