MEDIA STATEMENT

“Since we began more than a century ago, The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh has continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of the very special children and families we serve. Our Board and senior leadership team have been working for the past couple of years to chart a smart path for the future – taking into consideration the important work of every service we offer, as well as how our environment has changed around us.

Through this work, it has become clear that we must evolve once again. Over the coming months, we will discontinue our inpatient services, which will allow The Children’s Institute to more fully invest in and expand our outpatient healthcare services, The Day School and Project STAR.

For years, we have seen negative trends in our inpatient census and revenue while our operating costs have continued to rise. Ultimately, it became clear this was the right path for our organization to remain strong for the future. While this was a difficult decision to make, we are energized by the possibilities that exist to more fully invest in and expand our outpatient healthcare services, The Day School and Project STAR. We are committed to these services, and there are very few organizations across the country that meet the combination of needs that these programs serve.

These changes will not happen overnight – we are committed to a thoughtful process over the next few months that takes good care of impacted patients, families and our employees. While we do not anticipate a need to transfer patients, we know that Pittsburgh is home to world-class providers of pediatric care, and we will work closely with our current and prospective inpatient families to identify alternative options for care if needed.

We are heartened by what we know is possible for The Children’s Institute in this new chapter. Ultimately, we believe we will reach so many more families and children with unique needs – through expansion of our existing programs and the addition of new outreach services.”
