Your company’s support for The Children’s Institute serves as a reminder that the business community in western Pennsylvania cares about the health and well being of children and young adults with special needs.

Amazing Kids. Amazing Place.

  • We are a licensed, independent, non-profit organization with a 105-year history of providing individualized pediatric services along a broad continuum.
  • The Hospital at The Children’s Institute, which is an 60-bed rehabilitation hospital licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, is the only free-standing pediatric rehabilitation specialty hospital in Pennsylvania and one of 20 in the country and served 2,200 children in fiscal year 2006.

The Day School at The Children’s Institute has been long regarded as a national leader in the education of children with special needs, is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as an approved private school for nearly 200 students ages 2 through 21, and was the first school in the State of Pennsylvania to be approved by the National Commission on Accreditation of Special Education Services (NCASES).

Project STAR at The Children’s Institute, licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare as an adoption, foster care and private children and youth social service agency, provided family placement, reservation/reunification or enrichment services for 768 clients in fiscal year 2006.

We served more than 3,200 children and their families in fiscal year 2006, and typically provide between $3 and $4 million annually in charity care.

Cash Gifts

Whether you’re helping to meet the most urgent needs of The Children’s Institute or supporting a particular program or service more aligned with your philanthropic objectives, your tax-deductible cash gift will ensure that no child or family is without care, support and the opportunity to make the most out of life.

For instance, Through The Campaign for an Amazing Future, Highmark Foundation supports the McGuinn Family Respite Care Program, while H.J. Heinz Company Foundation supports pediatric obesity research for our Prader-Willi Syndrome program. Other corporate funders, such as Duquesne Light Foundation, Mellon Financial Corporation, and United States Steel Foundation support unrestricted needs through The Campaign for an Amazing Future.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution please make a gift online,  to mail with your gift, or contact Helene Conway-Long  at 412.420.2201.

Matching Gifts

Companies can greatly expand their gifts to The Children’s Institute by matching — even doubling — their employees’ financial donations.

  • Employers - matching gifts demonstrate your support of your employees’ charitable efforts. Consider doubling or tripling payroll deductions, annual gifts and/or corporate event contributions. Your matching gifts encourage employee involvement at charity events, increase their loyalty and demonstrate your commitment to the community.
  • Employees - check with your Human Resources or Community Relations representative to see if your company or organization has a matching gifts program. Obtain your company’s matching gifts application, which may be available online, complete it and send it along with your contribution to The Children’s Institute. Our Matching Gifts Companies list includes companies who have contributed to The Children’s Institute in the past through matching gifts.

In-Kind Donations

The Children’s Institute welcomes the opportunity to consider in-kind gifts, a tangible item or product that can either be used by The Children’s Institute or sold to an outside party. Unlike gifts of cash and securities, in-kind gifts allow you to receive the benefit of a charitable contribution without drawing on cash flow and cash reserves. In-kind donations may also provide The Children’s Institute substantial value. Contact  Amy Haid  at 412.420.2321 for more information.
