Shining Light on Our Environment
Shining Light on Our Environment $1,500,000
The Children's Institute is a beacon of light in a time of darkness - a source of warmth and hope for children and families from this region and from around the world. Our goal is to capture this light and reflect it throughout the exterior and interior of the Squirrel Hill facility in distinct ways.
Through our recent Campaign for an Amazing Future, The Children's Institute was able to expand our rehabilitation and educational space. Now, we look to further enhance the interior and exterior spaces to foster healing and growth in a child- and family-friendly environment. We can truly light up the campus by implementing a way-finding system that is useful and usable for everyone; using The Children's Institute's existing art and artifact collections to articulate and enhance the aesthetics and identity of the facility; and completing a therapeutic garden.
Interior Enhancements............................ $750,000
Providing our excellent services in a more family-centered and child-focused environment is a priority of The Children's Institute. Changes in our physical plant can help foster healing pediatric patients, as well as that of their parents and caregivers. Through this initiative, our surroundings will better reflect the caring services delivered to families. From instituting a way-finding system to ease navigation around our Squirrel Hill facility, to installing interactive wall decorations in the hallways, the inside of our building will be more colorful, fun for children and be like a "home away from home" for families who may spend many hours or many days here.
The Nimick Family Therapeutic Garden..$750,000
Thanks to the $1 million gift from the Nimick Forbesway Foundation, this 10,000 square foot, fully accessible garden will bring beauty and serenity, as well as therapeutic, educational, emotional and social opportunities to patients, students, families and the community. With dedication planned for summer 2011, many named gift opportunities remain to honor Florence and Tom Nimick's dedication to The Children's Institute or to create a loving tribute to a family member or loved one. A variety of opportunities exist from $2,500 to $250,000, which will be used to create a much-needed maintenance endowment for the garden.
