We designed Recreation Therapy at The Hospital at The Children’s Institute to restore, improve and rehabilitate patients to increase their functioning and independence. It is also designed to reduce or eliminate the effects of their illness or disability.
Upon a physician’s referral, a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS) assesses the patient’s interests, functional abilities and skills and barriers to activities. A treatment plan is devised based on the findings.
For patients who need to practice skills in a community environment, our CTRS can provide a community integration plan. Our CTRS coordinates outings with the treatment team and establishes goals for the patient during those outings.
Recreation Therapy at The Hospital at The Children’s Institute also provides:
- Adapted sports and recreation
- Pet-assisted therapy and visitation
- Aquatics
- Multi-sensory exploration
- Austin’s Playroom — open and staffed 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, the playroom provides the perfect atmosphere for therapeutic recreation or developmental play and activities.
