Getting Started

There are many ways you can become a Project STAR resource family for a child. Some resource families are adoptive parents. Others choose to offer foster care or medical foster care. Still other resource families offer respite or emergency shelter care. A respite family provides care for a child for a few days to a few weeks so their family can have an interval of rest. An emergency shelter family offers care on a temporary basis for a child needing immediate assistance.

The next step is to attend one of Project STAR’s information meetings. We hold these meetings several times a month at various locations. At the information meeting you will be able to ask questions and learn about:

Partnering with Project STAR

After deciding that we are the right agency to work with you, the next step is for you to begin the parent certification process. To begin this process, you must complete 24 hours of family education. Project STAR offers family education classes at least three times a year in both Allegheny and Beaver counties.
