General School Information
The Day School at The Children’s Institute is an Approved Private School, licensed by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Private Academic Schools and approved as a Special Education School by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education.
Our school is fully accredited by the National Commission for the Accreditation of Special Education Services (NCASES).
We serve approximately 190 students from Allegheny and 7 surrounding counties in 26 beautifully designed and maintained classrooms. We presently operate 16 classrooms for students who are challenged by multiple disabilities and 10 classrooms for students with autism.
Students from ages 5 to 21 call The Day School “their school.”
Generally, there are 6 to 9 students in a classroom with one teacher and two full-time paraprofessionals.
Adapted physical education, art, library and music classes are taught by certified teachers in those subject areas. Each of these teachers is assisted by one paraprofessional dedicated to that classroom.
Student progress in our classrooms is enhanced and reinforced by a full complement of related services in the areas of Occupational, Physical and Speech and Language therapies. We also provide behavioral support, social work, psychological services, nursing services and play/social skills training.
All of our professional and administrative staff members hold credentials appropriate to their positions, and all of our certifications and licenses meet the requirements needed to serve in either public or private schools in Pennsylvania.
The majority of our direct service staff maintains certifications in the areas of Safety Care Training, CPR and First Aid.
Students enjoy the use of a large gymnasium, a full-size swimming pool, kitchen and living areas, a student library, treatment areas for occupational, physical and speech/language therapy, a fully equipped sensory room and a multi-purpose room used for lunches and other student activities.
The Day School shares a strong commitment to quality. On an ongoing basis, we explore new methods and materials, encourage best practices and ensure that our staff has opportunities to maintain their skills and increase their knowledge base for the benefit of student progress.
