boy with rubber bandsThe Physical Therapy department at The Hospital at The Children’s Institute is staffed by a dynamic team of therapists who are committed to providing the highest quality care for our patients. Our goal is to provide the most comprehensive care possible. Physical therapy is the use of facilitation, therapeutic exercise, treatment strategies, assistive technology and play/movement activities to treat and improve motor and physical dysfunction. We provide and create an environment of therapeutic and rehabilitative care that is personalized and focuses not only on the needs of the patient, but also the needs of the family. Through the use of our resources, we provide services that focus on the environmental aspects of the patient’s life. We offer innovative treatments, therapeutic techniques, the latest assistive and therapeutic technology and our expertise to help our patients reach their maximum potential and live the most fulfilling lives possible.

When to Refer

Your child should be referred for physical therapy services if he or she exhibits any of the following:

  • Physical disabilities or impairments  
  • More than six months delay in achieving age appropriate developmental milestones
  • Functional limitations related to balance, walking or gross motor coordination
  • Changes in physical function and health status resulting from injury or disease
  • Pain
  • Problems with basic movement (absent or limited)
  • Sports related injury
  • Orthopedic condition or injury
  •  Neurological condition (sustained through either birth or injury)
  • Processing disorders that effect coordination, motor or functional skills
