Inpatient Medical Management

Inpatients are generally co-managed by a general pediatrician and a physiatrist (physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, or PM&R). Each child’s attending physician is determined based on his individual needs.

Pediatrics
Our pediatric physicians serve as attending physicians for inpatient admissions. Focusing on patient and family centered care, the pediatrician leads the treatment team and manages all medical needs including complex care related to tube feedings, ventilator management and weaning, tracheostomy care, wound management, infection control and medications.

Pediatric and Adolescent Psychiatry

Psychiatry functions as an important component of our treatment team for patients in the pediatric rehabilitation and Prader-Willi Syndrome Programs. For other patients, we consult our psychiatry staff on an as needed basis.

The staff psychiatrist interacts closely with members of the treatment team, particularly the psychologists, to provide assessments and to participate in the development and implementation of behavior-related programs to improve patient outcomes.

The psychiatrist assesses and modifies medication to an optimal level, and as necessary, prescribes other medications in conjunction with other clinical components to help manage the patient and achieve the best outcome.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry)

Physicians specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation serve as attending and consulting physicians on the inpatient team. By combining the expertise of our physiatrists, we’re able to development an individualized treatment plan focused on optimizing each child’s functional capability. Our physiatrists provide specialized tests and treatments, such as Elecromyography, Botox and Baclofen, to assist in diagnosis and management of orthopedic and neurological impairments. The physiatrists work collaboratively with the treatment team, ordering orthotics, prosthetics, wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment to support optimal functionality for each child.

An extensive consulting medical staff, which includes physicians with recognized professional ability in specialized areas, provides inpatient consultation and recommends treatment.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry)

Physicians specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation have expertise related to all aspects of physical disability. The physiatrist provides specialized tests and treatments, such as Elecromyography, Botox and Baclofen, to assist in diagnosis and management of orthopedic and neurologic impairments. Working collaboratively with the treatment team, the physiatrist will order orthotics, prosthetics, wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment to support the optimal functioning for each child.

Outpatient physical medicine and rehabilitation clinics provide follow-up care, often for years, for children with chronic disabilities, ensuring modifications in treatment and initiation of new services as needed as each child grows and progresses through her lifespan.
