Education Services

Little GirlThe Cognitive and Behavioral Learning Environment (CABLE) is our school program for children while they are inpatients at The Hospital at The Children’s Institute. Our CABLE staff provides a cognitive assessment and educational program recommendations for all inpatients that are in kindergarten through grade 12 in both the Pediatric Rehabilitation and Prader-Willi Syndrome Programs.

A Pennsylvania certified elementary/special education teacher meets with patients and works with them either one-on-one or in a small group to fulfill their educational goals. The CABLE program teacher communicates with the school districts to ensure grade- appropriate learning as well as preparing the district for any adaptations that need to be made for the child’s return to school. The teacher involved with a child’s CABLE program communicates educational goals to parents and the child’s home school district’s teacher, and welcomes their involvement in the educational process.

Working collaboratively with the physician, case manager and therapy team, the teacher participates in a school conference. At this conference we communicate each child’s ongoing academic needs to the home school district in order to help them make a positive transition back to school. Representatives from the school are invited to The Hospital at The Children’s Institute for training and education related to the child’s current condition. The school and parents are also encouraged to prepare classmates for the student’s return.
