The Therapeutic Support Assistant is responsible for monitoring patients on the inpatient unit to which he/she is assigned. Implements the therapeutic approaches required in care of physically, cognitively, emotionally, socially, behaviorally disabled pediatric, adolescent and/or adult patients. Supports the delivery of active daily living skills. Reports to the unit’s team leader or assigned staff nurse and provides assistance to the nursing care team.
Responsible To: Team Leader, Staff Registered Nurse, Unit Manager
Workers Supervised: None
Education: Must be a high school graduate or GED. Bachelors preferred in psychology, social work, or speech/occupational therapy or a related discipline. Two years work experience required. Six months work experience in a developmental/behavioral setting is preferred.
Clearances: Act 73 FBI * Act 34 Criminal Clearance * Act 33 Child Clearance
**Clearances must be obtained within 30 days of hire in order to continue active employment.
Training and Experience: Behavioral Work Experience: Capable of providing physical safety interventions to unpredictable and potentially aggressive patients. Comfortable caring for patients with developmental and mental disabilities. Consistently demonstrates the use of therapeutic communications to reduce patient anxiety or stress.
•Provides care consistent with patient’s age and developmental status.
•Completes or facilitates activities of daily living, medical treatments, and rehabilitation prescriptions to maximize functioning.
•Adheres to the individualized behavioral plan prescribed by the patient care team.
•Applies safe physical interventions with unpredictable and potentially aggressive patients, in cooperation with other members of the health care team.
•Engages in positive and therapeutically constructive interactions with pediatric, young adult and adult patients.
•Applies innovation and creativity when engaging patients in activities or recreation.
•Ensures a safe environment for patients, families and staff and follows through on all safety procedures appropriate for the patient's condition and age/developmental level.
•Aids staff in meeting individualized needs for learning, behavior management or crises management.
•Maintains an organized and orderly patient care environment.
